Country Roads
We could never figure out why
after the road was cclosed
they left the sign that said Highway 55
It had to be the worst head banging,
spine jolting, chassis smashing
two mile stretch of erosion
that went nowhere but we used it
when the boys with their big city cars
came out to town looking
for a little weekend fun and
needing direction we'd just tell them
and it mattered not which girl was asked for
because she always lived two miles
down Highway # 55
advise 'em, of course, it might be a little rough
'cause it ain't been graded for awhile
give or take 'bout 30 minutes
and they'd be back
but guaranteed
you couldn't find us
on them streets
Battttttttman
Battman came to town to battle rural crime
drove his auto mobile up and down
our one and only street. There wasn't much action
and he grew bored with that profession
retired from fighting for law and order.
and ran the hardware store instead
Sold R C A and garden spades,
baseball bats and dinner plates
Winter Waltz
On the line
stiff with cold
suits of long johns
glide along the snow
spying my mother
they gather in her arms
waltz her indoors
across the warm kitchen floor
where they collapse
in wooden chairs
slightly damp and
wilting from their effort
The Photograph
Now he sits upon your dresser
a man captured
in a black & white photograph
his cap at an angle and his eyes
still sparkle years after
the camera caught his laughter
